The Gaps in Massachusetts Motorcycle Insurance (And Why We Build Your Policy Differently)

Many carriers and agencies will happily sell you a standard motorcycle policy that looks exactly like your auto insurance. They punch in your vehicle, select the state minimums, and hit "bind," hoping you never have to actually use it.

At Suprenant Insurance LLC, we firmly oppose this approach.

Riding in Massachusetts comes with its own strict set of rules, and applying a standard "car insurance" mindset to a motorcycle leaves you dangerously exposed. Here is the truth about insuring your bike in MA, and why choosing the right carrier matters.

The Massachusetts "Gotchas"

The Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) and state insurance laws have specific carve-outs for motorcycles that often catch even experienced riders off guard.

The PIP Trap (Why You Need MedPay)

If you are injured in a car crash in Massachusetts, Personal Injury Protection (PIP) automatically covers up to $8,000 of your medical bills and lost wages, regardless of fault.

This is not true for motorcycles.

Massachusetts law specifically excludes motorcycle operators and passengers from collecting PIP benefits. If you go down, you have zero automatic medical coverage from your auto policy. This is why we insist our riders carry Medical Payments (MedPay). MedPay steps in to pay for your out-of-pocket health insurance deductibles, copays, or direct medical costs up to your chosen limit, no matter who caused the crash.

The Permit Passenger Rule

If you are riding on a motorcycle learner's permit, the RMV strictly prohibits you from carrying a passenger (a "guest occupant"). If you cause an accident while illegally carrying a passenger, it can severely complicate your liability and coverage claims. We make sure our riders know the rules of the road before they are put in a compromised position.

Why We Advocate for Progressive

As an independent agency, we have access to multiple carriers, but when it comes to motorcycles, Progressive consistently sets themselves apart. They don't just treat your bike like a two-wheeled car; they actually understand how riders live and operate.

Here is why they are often our go-to choice for Massachusetts riders:

  • Total Riding Experience Rating: Most carriers determine your rate based on how long you have officially held your motorcycle license. Progressive does it differently. They rate based on your total years of riding experience. If you grew up riding dirt bikes in your backyard for a decade before getting your street license, Progressive factors in that lifetime of experience—which can significantly lower your premium.

  • Zero Depreciation on Custom Parts: If you add comprehensive and collision coverage, Progressive automatically includes $3,000 (you can buy more) for accessories and custom parts/equipment (CPE). Better yet, they offer full replacement cost. If you crash and damage a custom chrome exhaust, standard carriers pay you the depreciated, used value. Progressive pays the cost of a brand-new exhaust to return the bike to pre-accident condition.

  • Carried Contents Protection: If you hit a pothole on the Mass Pike and your smartphone flies off its mount, or your saddlebags pop open and your gear is ruined, standard policies leave you paying out of pocket. Progressive includes Carried Contents® coverage which gives $2,000 (you can buy more), which pays to replace the personal effects you are carrying—like phones, camping gear, or heavy riding leathers—if they are damaged in a covered loss.

Technology and automation have their place, but when you are out on the road, you need a policy built by humans who understand the actual risks. That is exactly what we do.
